KHR Organization Calls for a Serious Investigation into the Assassination of Lounès Matoub

June 25, 2026, marks the 28th anniversary of the assassination of Lounès Matoub, the renowned Kabyle singer, political activist, and human rights advocate whose voice became a symbol of freedom, democracy, and cultural resistance.

Lounès Matoub dedicated his life to defending the cultural, linguistic, and identity rights of the Kabyle people. Through his songs, poetry, and public engagement, he courageously challenged authoritarianism, promoted democratic values, advocated for secularism, and opposed religious extremism. His unwavering commitment to freedom of expression and human rights made him one of the most influential figures in contemporary Kabyle history.

Many Kabyles believe that Lounès Matoub was targeted because of his outspoken opposition to the Algerian military-backed regime and his steadfast defense of the rights and dignity of the Kabyle people.

Despite the passage of nearly three decades, serious questions surrounding his assassination remain unanswered. To this day, no independent and credible investigation has been conducted that would establish the full truth, identify all those responsible, and provide justice to his family and the Kabyle people.

On this solemn anniversary, Kabyles for Human Rights (KHR) renews its call on the Algerian authorities to open a serious, transparent, and impartial investigation into the assassination of Lounès Matoub. Those who planned, ordered, facilitated, or carried out this crime must be identified and held accountable in accordance with the principles of justice and the rule of law.

Justice for Lounès Matoub remains a legitimate and enduring demand.
